There is something unique about the end of one year and the beginning of the next. On May 14th, we don’t think too much about the passage of time – unless that day is your birthday. August 3rd really doesn’t do much in the way of causing reflection – unless that day is your anniversary. November 29th doesn’t generate much hype on the web – unless you post your senior picture.
Then there is December 30th. Year-end lists and reviews, plans for parties, new calendars getting hung up. December 31st comes next and it is really one huge day linked to its sibling: January 1st. New commitments, funny resolutions, and the beginning of writing a new year all wrong for a while.
As you look back and look forward will you look in and look out? What will you do that will change you? It’s not being selfish, but being responsible. Now, what will you do to help others? Not just your friends and family, although that is a great start, but the stranger you meet who simply needs a moment of your time. How about the person who needs a few dollars or that tool or that suggestion or that idea?
Look back, look forward, look in, look out.
