I have no idea when this invention first came on the market. In The Passion of the Christ you would think it was Jesus who had a role in the idea. Some cultures use it, some don’t. In 21st century America, almost every home has one. It also exists in big numbers in places where we go to eat. The dinner table. Simple in design, profound in use.
Think for a moment of all the conversations you have had around the dinner table. I have memories of my family all gathered around 2 or 3 tables at Grandma’s house during the holidays. Then there were those conversations we had at home when Mom fixed the evening meal and we all sat down to eat. With my own children, we end up talking about everything from the daily events to life in Bible times.
Around a table at Cracker Barrel. Around a table at Starbucks. Around a table at McDonalds. Around a table at your aunt’s. Around a table at your neighbor’s. I’m so glad someone invented the table. It is around this piece of furniture that we can share a part of our lives and invite others to share a part of theirs. With a plate of meatloaf in front of us or a glass of iced tea, we can talk about anything and everything: politics, weather, new cars, old cars, favorite recipes, favorite books, yesterday’s success, yesterday’s failure, tomorrow’s plan, tomorrow’s worry. The best part? The person you share the table with is someone you can share Jesus with. In fact, if you are sharing a table with someone, you are already very much like Jesus. Look at Luke’s gospel. Jesus did his fair share of table time.
The next time you pull up a chair at a table with someone, thank God for that table and then ask him to bless your time around it.
