Over the years the medium has changed. Just in my lifetime I’ve had music on 45’s, 33’s, cassettes, CD’s and MP3’s. Music comes at us from our car radios and our TV speakers. We hum a song when we are working on a project and we sing a song at birthday parties. Music is a great invention! It captures thoughts and feelings in a way that nothing else can. Did Adam whistle while he worked? Did Eve teach the kids any rhymes set to music? We don’t know the answer to that but we know that a few verses later a guy named Jubal was putting a band together.
In your Bible you also have a song book. Did you know that? Psalms is a collection of lyrics. We don’t know the tunes, but we have the message the songwriter wanted to share. In those lyrics we learn about God, His plan, ourselves, nature, and more! The medium of music can be a fascinating way to share a message.
Do certain songs bring back memories for you? When one comes on the radio do you flash back to another time and place? Do certain songs at Christmas remind you of something from years ago? How about Thanksgiving songs? (No, I don’t know any, but I thought you might.) Those songs are sharing a message or a memory or a mood.
Songs are used in movies to capture a feeling. They are used in worship to point to a Savior. They are used at an event to excite the crowd. They are used at the same event to calm the crowd. The music may come in the form of notes from several instruments. The music may come from one or more voices. The music may be a diverse mixture of both. Throughout all of the notes and lyrics a message is shared.
Who do you know who could be encouraged by a song? Which of your friends would understand God a little better if they heard a certain song or a certain lyric? Who in your family would be changed if they could listen to that CD of yours for a while? Music. It can soften a heart, strengthen a resolve, bridge a gap. How will you use this invention next?
